Liquid-crystal tunable photonic components

Abstract:

Liquid crystals are a state of matter sharing properties from both isotropic liquids and solid crystalline materials. Fostered by technological development in the field of displays, research on liquid crystals experienced a huge growth in the last decades. Going beyond displays, there are numerous applications in photonics technology with liquid crystals as the key element towards dynamically tunable functionalities. This talk presents an introduction to the optical properties of liquid crystals and discusses some liquid-crystal tunable components for optical fiber technology, photonic/plasmonic integrated circuitry and electromagnetic wave control.
